The Academy team of swordmasters Dan Speaker and Jan Bryant design fights from the ground up in order to create unique work for each project. They are specialists at not only training actors and stunt people to perform specific sequences, but also working with the director and designers to integrate those sequences so that they advance the story. They can work from the beginning stages of concept all the way to the final edit, or provide any of the stages in between, including historical research, style consultation, actor training and weapon design.
Jan and Dan are experts in their field and have trained actors and designed fights for the films Hook, Army of Darkness, Hot Shots Part Deux, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Hidalgo, and a host of others, as well as numerous television productions, video games, and live stage projects.
The Academy has a wide variety of training options. The Academy Swordmasters often train actors, stunt doubles, and stunt performers on set as part of the fight design and coordination of a project. You can also bring your actors to the Academy for a crash course in historical or modern weaponry tailored for your production.
Training for Projects
The Academy offers its professional training program, Fight Class, for industry stunt performers and actors who wish to learn or maintain theatrical combat as a skill, and private lessons are available upon request.
The Academy Swordmasters can train you in several combat disciplines, including but not limited to:
- Broadsword (hand and a half style)
- Sword and Buckler
- Rapier and Dagger (Single Rapier, Rapier and Cloak, etc.)
- Classical Smallword
- Hollywood Swashbuckling (Vaudeville Sabre)
- Hand to Hand Fighting (Unarmed Combat, Rolls and Falls)
The Academy also teaches variations on these, as well as other weapons and styles, such as double rapier, whip cracking, knife fighting, and much more. All training emphasizes selling the action for the camera or audience.
Need something special for a fantasy film? Have major stars, a huge cast, or a difficult time frame? Want someone ready to go by tomorrow? Contact the Academy to get project-specific training. We can come up with what you need! If the Academy does not regularly teach a weapon or style you are looking for, just ask, the swordmasters may be able to direct you to someone who does.
In addition, you can talk to them about putting together the action choreography and design for your production and/or coordinating the fights on set. Dan, Jan and Kim can bring their experience and expertise in wherever you need it.
